Maths Tutoring in Victoria
Victoria uses the VCE — Victorian Certificate of Education — structured around four units across Years 11 and 12. The VCE system is unique in that Year 11 Unit 3-4 subjects can be completed early by accelerated students, and the final ATAR combines external exams with school-based assessment (SACs) in most subjects.
Mathematics is the single most tutored subject in Australia, and with good reason. It compounds — what you missed in Year 7 algebra shows up again in Year 10 quadratics and Year 12 calculus. Our maths tutors work with students from primary school arithmetic all the way through HSC Extension 2 and VCE Specialist.
What your tutor can cover
- Arithmetic and number sense
- Fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Algebra and equations
- Geometry and trigonometry
- Functions and graphing
- Probability and statistics
- Calculus (differentiation and integration)
Why maths matters for VIC students
Maths is a gatekeeper subject for most university pathways. Engineering, medicine, data science, commerce, architecture, and almost every STEM degree have maths prerequisites. Even outside STEM, the ATAR scaling on senior maths subjects gives them disproportionate weight in university entry.
Where VIC students get stuck
The most common reason students fall behind in maths isn't ability — it's a missing foundation. A student struggling with Year 10 trigonometry often has gaps going back to Year 8 geometry. Good tutoring diagnoses where the actual gap is, then rebuilds from there.
How a VCE-aligned tutor helps
A one-on-one maths tutor can work at exactly the right pace for your child — slowing down where they need to consolidate, accelerating where they're confident. That's impossible in a classroom of 28 students moving at the same speed. Weekly sessions over a term usually show measurable improvement.

Do your maths tutors know the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) syllabus?
Yes. Tutors pick the exact VCE courses they teach from our subject list, and Find a tutor lets you narrow a subject to them. VCE Mathematics options include General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics. English is split between Mainstream English, English Language, and Literature. Strong VCE performance is heavily scaled in Mathematics Methods, Specialist Mathematics, and Chemistry.
